Dueling Creek Academy of Leadership in Environmental Science and Fine Arts (DCAL) is a startup non-profit looking for seed funding to establish our organization, implement educational programs, field studies, and equipment/supplies. H. Nelson Jackson said it best, “I do not believe you can do today’s job with yesterday’s methods and be in business tomorrow.” This organization is created to educate inner city youth about the environment, using educational strategies that challenge how our youth learn. There is a disparity within urban communities as to how children are educated about the environment, how we approach rigor in academics, and also how creativity and innovation is lacking as a necessary component in addressing many of our social and economic ills.
My vision is to increase the visibility of underrepresented ethnic groups in the fields of environmental education and awareness, diversifying the global and cultural experiences of children from the inner city and to inspire leadership among children by progressively changing how they see themselves as environmental stewards and advocates for their personal communities. We will change the trajectory of our nation by supporting the growth and development of students who will be the pioneers and educational leaders of tomorrow.
Our goal is to physically connect students with communities beyond our nation to learn how people around the world remain connected to the environment. This will include domestic and international travel. The initial launch will hope to service approximately 20-30 students. We hope to expand our services within the next couple of years. We plan to change the narrative on the subject of the environment, education, and the arts by promoting programs and activities that will offer a fresh and new perspective. Our activities will commence during spring and summer vacations. Our goal is to create leadership within our youth that transcends gender, socio-economic class, and career fields as it pertains to eco-consciousness. Whether the students we work with become educators, doctors, artists, or engineers, the knowledge and skills they will acquire from our programs will impact their communities and career fields by changing the narrative on global awareness, environmental issues, and stewardship.
